The Community Impact Editor is responsible for leading and creating analytical, persuasive and solutions-based content tied to Dayton Daily News key news and investigative projects. The successful Community Impact Editor will be passionate about using the power of our brands and journalism to seek solutions to our communitys biggest problems, including how our community recovers from the public health pandemic and economic fallout. The Community Impact Editor must be a focused and results-oriented journalist, an inspiring community leader, a digital-first content thinker and a partner with the Investigative Editor, providing the critical link between investigative journalism and community feedback and direction. This person does not manage people but manages relationships with a board, community leaders, contributors and syndicates, and readers. To do that, the Community Impact Editor will:

  • Establish, recruit, manage and lead a board of community members to provide direction and feedback on Dayton Daily News content as well as to create content themselves
  • Establish, recruit, manage and lead community contributors who provide insight and analysis of investigative topics in all formats - text, audio, video, interactives, social
  • Create persuasive, solution-oriented content that connects with our investigative journalism and is digital-first, ensuring it meets the highest standards of journalism and digital engagement
  • Conduct outreach for, participate in and lead community forums and conversations related to our investigative and community impact mission
  • Write, edit and optimize content, including audio, video, social, interactive and text
  • Create impactful and balanced digital and print presentations
  • Partner with the Investigative Editor to create real community change through our journalism
  • Use audience, product and community research to guide topics and presentation
  • Use metrics to improve content, presentation, optimization and distribution strategies
  • Approach topics with an eye toward solutions and positive community change
  • Identify and cultivate partnerships with community organizations and engage directly with community members in-person and in written communication
  • Connect with influencers to expand the reach and impact of the investigative teams work, including through social media and other networking techniques
  • Convene editorial board and write editorials on the most important local issues
  • Respond to reader concerns promptly and professionally
  • Proactively address bias concerns
  • Cultivate reader contributions in the form of letters and social media comments
  • Manage Ideas and Voices pages

Reporting Relationships: Reports to: Investigations and Impact Director. Will have no direct reports.

Qualifications:

  • At least 3 years experience leading digital content creation, distribution and optimization
  • A Bachelors degree or higher in a Communications/ Journalism related filed is strongly preferred
  • Deep understanding of social media and influencer strategies
  • Proven ability to use research to guide content and coverage decisions
  • Proven ability to use metrics to adjust coverage strategies
  • Ability to seek and take feedback from community leaders and readers
  • Ability to organize and lead community boards
  • Excellent news judgment and journalistic skills
  • Excellent headline writing skills and ability to frame topics in the most impactful ways
